Jute Substrate

Jute is an organic substrate which is made from long vegetable fibres extracted from the outer stem of the jute plant (Corchorus species), a tall, herbaceous plant with long, slender stalks.

As a hydroponic substrate or growing medium jute is highly durable and reusable, and can tolerate being cleaned after a grow, and reused again. It is also completely biodegradable and can be simply composted after use.

When used in dual grow-tray systems (with reservoir and top tray) the highly efficient wicking tendency of this substrate means irrigant can be added to the reservoir and it will be drawn out by the absorbent fibre, saving on top or spray irrigation requirement.

This substrate is thin and may at first appear to be a poor candidate for growth media, however in our trials we have found this to be one of the most effective substrates, and certainly the simplest and cleanest to use. Additionally, when it comes to harvest, the tough jute material can be lifted out entire from the grow tray for easy access, making harvesting extremely easy.

The jute mats are available as a standard cut size (250 mm x 500 mm), or in larger rolls of 1 metre width x 10 m length.

About the jute plant:

Jute has been used for centuries and is known for its versatility and durability. It is commonly used to make various products such as bags, sacks, ropes, twine, mats, carpets, and even textiles.

Jute is an environmentally friendly fibre as it is biodegradable and renewable. It requires relatively low amounts of pesticides and fertilizers for cultivation and has a high carbon dioxide absorption capacity during growth, which helps in reducing atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Due to its excellent tensile strength and resistance to heat and moisture, jute is used in a range of applications, including packaging materials (particularly for agricultural commodities like grains, coffee, cocoa, and vegetables), insulation materials, geotextiles, and composites.

Overall, jute is a versatile and sustainable fibre that finds widespread applications across various industries, primarily due to its strength, durability, and eco-friendliness.
