HOME » Monitoring & Measurement for Vertical Farming
Accurate monitoring is the foundation of every successful vertical farming system. By tracking environmental data like temperature, humidity and CO₂ levels, growers can make precise adjustments and boost overall efficiency. We offer a curated selection of sensors and monitoring tools from leading manufacturers, designed for seamless integration into CEA setups.
Plants will thrive or fail depending on the climate of a grow environment. The level of heat and humidity needed to achieve optimum growth will differ between crop types, but is always something that requires consideration and adjustment to create ideal growing conditions.
Explore a wide range of monitoring tools designed for vertical farming, including climate sensors, data loggers and IoT-ready solutions.
Whether you’re building a fully automated system or want plug-and-play monitoring devices, we have the tools to keep your grow room data-driven.
Monitoring temperature ensures crops remain within optimal growth zones at every stage. Temperature is a key environmental factor that will influence plant growth profiles. For instance, if the temperature in a grow environment is too low for a given plant variety, this will adversely affect the amount of photosynthesis that the plant can undertake. If the environment becomes too hot, then plants will begin to cool themselves via transpiration, increasing water loss and reducing growth potential. In extremis, plants suffering from heat stress will exhibit a range of adverse stress responses, including tissue senescence, shoot and root growth inhibition, and damage or loss of fruit.
Thus, understanding and supplying exactly the right environmental and temperature conditions in a grow environment can result in significant differences in overall yield. In addition to keeping temperatures within the target range for plant growth, temperature management technology can also be used to augment environment characteristics. As an example, the optimum temperatures for plant productivity will likely vary during the day. Constant temperatures are less optimal for growth regimes than periods of diurnal temperature variation, such as higher temperatures to coincide with light period, and lower temperatures during the dark period. Plants recognise this variation through a process called thermoperiodism. Exploiting this natural system can improve the overall potential for growth, offering production advantages.
Humidity Tracking for Crop Health
Measuring humidity helps avoid plant stress, mould outbreaks, and disease risk. The higher the air temperature, the greater its capacity for supporting water in a vapour state, and the higher the specific humidity.
Humidity level can have significant effects on plant development and wellbeing. Environments which have a low humidity can induce plant water stress, negatively impacting growth potential, whereas high humidity levels can adversely alter plant growth and development, and encourage the outbreak of pests and disease.
Managing humidity is a key action for growers aiming to create the optimum conditions for plant growth, and is achieved through either the removal or addition of humidity to reach desired levels.
Airflow & CO₂ Measurement
Airflow and CO₂ levels must be consistently measured to support robust photosynthesis and even climate distribution.
Air movement is essential for multiple reasons including the venting of hot air and the introduction of cool (or cooled) air, the avoidance of ‘hot spots’, where the distribution of warm air (typically to the top of the grow environment) will lead to temperature differentials, reducing the potential for uniformity of growing conditions. Furthermore, the introduction and distribution of features such as CO2, which can become depleted if not replenished by either the introduction of fresh air, or production using apparatus such as a CO2 generator.
Generally, keeping air moving within a grow environment offers numerous benefits over static air systems. Thus, utilising adequate air handling equipment and technology is essential.
